The truth el-Rufai and Ribadu should tell the north - Azuka Onwuka

Anytime the likes of Prof. Ango Abdullahi, Dr Junaid Mohammed, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, Lamido of
Adamawa, Mr. Anthony Sani or any of the members of the Arewa Consultative Forum or Northern Elders Forum speak on national issues, there are some things that are constant in their speeches: Arrogance, condescension, threats, etc. If the matter has to do with national resources, two critical “words” must be present in their speeches: “Sharing” and “allocation.” That makes you wonder: Don’t these “elders” feel that they are insulting the North by their fixation on “sharing?” Don’t they feel they are insulting the North by portraying the region as incapable of taking care of itself? Don’t the younger generation feel ridiculed
by this unenviable image foisted on them by these elders? Most times when these comments fly around, the lone dissenting voice you would hear is that of Col. Abubakar Umar (retd.), a former Governor of Kaduna State.

My services are still available – Boko Haram negotiator

Nigerian born journalist, Ahmad Salkida , who is reported to have strong ties with the Boko Haram sect, has said that he is still readily available to render his services to bring an end to the insurgency in the country.

Reports have claimed that Salkida was close to the late Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf and other top antagonists of the Nigerian peace - but Ahmad fled to the United Arab Emirates on account of an alleged threat to his life over what he described as his “professional closeness” to the insurgents.

Abducted girls: Chukwumerije hits out at Defence Chief over comment

Senator Uche Chukwumerije has condemned a statement credited to the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh - that the military had discovered the camps where the abducted Chibok girls were being held, according to Punch.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, who spoke to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, said that the information should have remained a top military secret.

Hence, he specifically condemned the assertion by Badeh that the military had located the camps where the abducted girls were being held.

“I am very much elated by the news that the location of our girls is now known to the army. But like the rest of the nation, especially observers, I am puzzled by one phrase, according to the military spokesman; their location is a military secret," he said.

“Now what puzzles me is simply this: why do you make public what you consider a military secret? As you are announcing the location or your discovery of the location of these girls, the news is being known to those holding them captive.

“And you think they are going to stay there and wait for you until you come to locate the girls and take them away?

“This puzzles me because we know in all American military operations you don’t hear a word about that until after their mission is accomplished.

“The next you will hear is that their mission has been accomplished. When the leader of Al Qaeda was dealt with, we know how it was done.

“Nobody even had a wind of what was going on until it was completed.

"So, let us hope and pray that if the news of the location of the girls is true that the enemy is not sufficiently warned to move before our men would strike.”

Wrong conception of 'manhood' - its effect on our society

In an era dominated by men who want to live a life void of ennui, the true meaning of the term 'manhood' has been generally abused. Most men are quick to refer to the word manhood - when speaking about matters of less relevance - without thinking of its true use.

Although an ambiguous term, the true definition of manhood ought to be shrouded by the assumption of the full responsibilities of a man. In other words, when referring to manhood, a person should be quick to think of responsibilities - and how to assume them.

Being prosperous in life isn't void of challenges but how you choose to deal with your obstacles matters a lot. Here is an inspiring story for you:

'His name is Sylvestar Stallone. One of the BIGGEST and Most famous American Movie superstars. Back in the day,Stallone was a struggling actor in every definition. At some point,he got so broke that he stole his wife's jewellery and sold it. Things got so bad that he even ended up homeless. Yes,he slept at the New York bus station for 3 days. Unable to pay rent or afford food. His lowest point came when he tried to sell his dog at the liquor store to any stranger. He didn't have money to feed the dog anymore. He sold it at $25 only. He says he walked away crying. Two weeks later,he saw a boxing match between Mohammed Ali and Chuck Wepner and that match gave him the inspiration to write the script for the famous movie, ROCKY.

Barcelona have come to the end of an era - Mendieta

Former Spain International Gaizka  Mendieta believes Barcelona have come to the end of an era and may have started the rebuilding process too late.

The Catalans handed over their La Liga title to Atletico Madrid after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Nou Camp - and manager Gerardo Tata Martino deemed it right to retire after a rather fruitless season.
And Mendieta said: “For Barca to change they need to get some new players. The cycle is coming to an end.

“I think they should have been trying to sort this a few seasons ago with [new] full-backs and a goalkeeper, knowing that Victor Valdes was not keen to renew his
contract.

“Xavi and Busquets seem to be irreplaceable. Maybe they should have looked at the key positions. Football runs in cycles – AC Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United – the biggest teams in Europe have their moments.

The president’s letter is the third of such request. The last two ones were approved by the Senate - but it is yet to be seen whether the red chamber will approve GEJ’s request after the one year expiration of the subsisting period on May 19.

This is even as Secretary of the Northern Senators Forum, Senator Ahmed Lawan (Yobe North), has

"Over the past few weeks, the abduction of the school girls at Chibok, Borno State has underscored the threat we have been facing as a nation in recent times from the actions of misguided persons masquerading as adherents of Islam.
Our hearts are with families who have lost loved ones in this cycle of senseless violence. We also empathize with the parents of children whose daughters are in the custody of a group of anarchists.

And the security of the international community at stake, the UN had this to say:

FA Cup Glory May Prove Impossible For Arsenal

Like in 2011, when Arsenal lost to Birmingham City in the Carling cup final, Hull City may again deprive Arsene Wenger of another silverware - judging by Steve Bruce's careful preservation of his best squad ahead of the FA Cup finals on May 17.

This FA Cup proves to be Hull City's surest hope of a trophy in the next decade - as Birmingham have struggled to feature in the Premier League after their success of 2011 - whereas, Arsenal are more hopeful than Hull next season.

In keeping his best legs for the final, Bruce, ahead of the Tuesday match against Manchester United, ruled out Sone Aluko, amongst others.

"Sone won't be available (for
Manchester United) on Tuesday, it
is touch and go for the cup final I
would have thought."

Moreover, there was some good news from the Tigers treatment room - as long-term absentees Allan McGregor (ribs/kidney) and Paul McShane (ankle) progressing well as they eye Wembley.

"McGregor has got a hell of a
chance the way he is going at the
moment," added Bruce.

"McShane is coming along well too
and we will see how they progress
in the next couple of weeks."

Iyabo Obasanjo's Open Letter To Boko Haram

Following the rampant bombings by the Boko Haram insurgents, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has written an open letter to the Islamist sect.

Iyabo blamed the leadership which she credited with “more sense but also faulted the insurgents for betraying the true essence of revolutionaries in directing their wickedness towards the lower class.

She what she has to say:

“I am moved to write about the
current state of affairs in Nigeria.
My first inclination was to write to
the President but since all letters to him seem to elicit only open
derision and even more stupidity
from his inner circle, I have decided to address my letter to a
group also currently causing
Nigerians a lot of pain and agony
that may actually have more sense
than the country’s leadership.

Dear Boko Haram

“First, your victims are becoming
more and more the people you
should be attracting to your side.
Take the Nyanya bus massacre.

“The people that live in Nyanya are usually the clerks, messengers and other lowly office workers that live out in relative slums compared to the rest of Abuja and take public
transportation to work to receive
monthly salaries they barely get by on.

“Consult any written work of
successful revolutionaries be it
French, Russian, Cuban or even the more recent uprooting of
communism in Eastern Europe, to
succeed you need the people to be on your side. Right now you are
not achieving this.

“You are targeting the group you
need most. This does not make for
a successful revolution but you are
making yourselves into nuisances to the people and in the end while the state, including its military machine may not be able to conquer you, your downfall will be alienating these potential allies, that is, the oppressed and down-trodden.

“Secondly, the abduction of girls. It
must be hard to stay in the bush as all male revolutionaries fending for yourselves with no s*xual gratification.

Cuban example

“But again, reading up on past bush revolutionaries like the Cuban, for example, indicates that they were able to convince some women to go voluntarily with them into the bush.

“Somehow, revolutionary zeal does not include s*xual abstinence and cooking and cleaning by yourselves.

“Reading must be hard for you
since you hate education but the
past is a good guide to the future
and if you can’t read, you are done
for in organizing or succeeding in
most endeavours as most things
have been done before and reading up on how it was done can only serve as good guidance.

“The parents of the girls you
abducted are just trying to give
their daughters a chance at having
successful lives. Without an
education there is very little anyone can achieve in this early 21st century.

“I know living in the bush; it must
still seem like the dark ages but the truth is that even with the lack of jobs and opportunities for young people in Nigeria currently, it is still better to be educated.

“An educated university graduate
who was selling food from a food
cart ignited the Arab Spring which
was spread by use of the internet
which is hard to use if you are not
educated.

“There are writings, videos and stuff you post on the internet which I haven’t seen. But think of it, you can only post and use the internet because some of you have some ducation.

“But in the end you have no
control over the distribution of
your advertising and recruiting
information because as you may
know, the internet is really part of
the western system you despise.

Why you’re succeeding

“The truth is that you have
succeeded because the Nigerian
state has failed to provide jobs and opportunity for its young people who you can now easily recruit. By disrupting education, you are adding to the burden of the people.

“You may say, but how about our
religious issue? Let the truth be
told, just as there are indigenous
southern Muslims, there are
indigenous northern Christians even from your epicentre in Borno State and just as you are zealous for your religion, I don’t see them giving up their religion either.

“The reasonable solution to this
impasse would be for you to
advocate for everyone to be able to practice their religion as they see fit with respect for each other’s beliefs.

“Remember, a couple of centuries
ago, all of our ancestors below the
Sahara were all animists worshipping various ‘gods.’

“This ‘One God’ — us against them
situation — is a relatively recent
one in our human history and you
will be advised to let the originators fight it out and let your people be.”

Jose Mourinho: Next Season Will Be Better

After last night Champion's League defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has said that his objective is to make a better campaign next season.

Mourinho suffered his heaviest home defeat as Chelsea manager, when Ardan Turan netted the third goal for Atleti - in the match which ended 3-1.

Rather than show sadness, Jose, 51, gave the credits to a 'better' Atletico side and stressed that next season would be one to remember for the Blues.

"Next season will be better than this season – that's our objective," said Mourinho, who had selected César Azpilicueta in midfield with Oscar injured.

"Our young players will be better, hopefully we will have a couple of players to improve our team and we will try to do better next season.

Chelsea hope to secure the services of Atleti's hitman - Diego Costa during the summer transfer window.
