Wayne Rooney Named England Captain

Recently appointed Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney, have also been named the new captain of England on Thursday.

Succeeding Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, the 28-year-old will lead the Three Lions in a friendly against Norway on September 3 and their opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland on September 8.

Coach Roy Hodgson made the announcement at a media conference at Wembley as he unveiled his squad for the forthcoming fixtures.

"I gave it a lot of thought but Wayne is an obvious choice," Hodgson told reporters.

"He deserves it - his commitment to the cause, his experience. He has captained England in the past and, of course, he has that responsibility at Manchester United now.

"I've had a long conversation with him and he's prepared to accept the pressures that the England captaincy brings. It's important that the player wants to take on that enormous responsibility."

Barcelona have come to the end of an era - Mendieta

Former Spain International Gaizka  Mendieta believes Barcelona have come to the end of an era and may have started the rebuilding process too late.

The Catalans handed over their La Liga title to Atletico Madrid after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Nou Camp - and manager Gerardo Tata Martino deemed it right to retire after a rather fruitless season.
And Mendieta said: “For Barca to change they need to get some new players. The cycle is coming to an end.

“I think they should have been trying to sort this a few seasons ago with [new] full-backs and a goalkeeper, knowing that Victor Valdes was not keen to renew his
contract.

“Xavi and Busquets seem to be irreplaceable. Maybe they should have looked at the key positions. Football runs in cycles – AC Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United – the biggest teams in Europe have their moments.

Sir Alex upset by Moyes sacking

Sir Alex Ferguson says he was "upset" at the way Manchester United handled the sacking of manager David Moyes.
Ten months after Moyes took over from Ferguson at Old Trafford, United finally lost patience with the Scot and dismissed him on Tuesday, despite news of his imminent departure having leaked 24 hours earlier.
"It's upsetting the way it came out," Ferguson said at a charity lunch in Manchester on Thursday despite sources having revealed to ESPN that he had been consulted on the decision to jettison Moyes.

According to ESPN, Sir Alex Ferguson says he was "upset" at the way Manchester United handled the sacking of his successor David Moyes.

Fergie retired last season and Moyes was the chosen one to fill his big shoes - but the former Everton boss was unable to get things right, as should; and this has left United stranded without a ticket to Champions League next season.

Giggs: United are no underdogs to Bayern

As Manchester United face Bayern Munich in a Champions League game on Tuesday, veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs has rejected the popular notion that the Red Devils are approaching the contest as underdogs.

Since the change of manager last summer, United have played below par - losing many local matches and fumbling in European competitions; like against Olympiakos when they were almost knocked out.

Following that poor run of form, majority of football spectators, all over the globe, have tipped Pep Guardiola's men to be favourites to survive the next stage; but the 40-year-old Welsh has rejected that global view.

Wayne Ronney admits difficulty this season

Manchester United highest paid player, Wayne Rooney, has admitted it is difficult to see Liverpool and Manchester City compete for the Premier League title, when the Red Devils aren't.

The defending champions have suffered a disappointing season, following the change of manager - from Sir Alex Ferguson to David Moyes last summer, with the later wanting to take a different approach.
And since the beginning of this campaign, United, unlike every other recent seasons, have not been able to occupy a place amongst the top four teams on the table. Continue...
