Former Barcelona Coach Dies At 45

Tito Vilanova, who succeeded Pep Guardiola as the manager of Barcelona, died on Thursday after surgery was unable to save his life.

The 45-year-old has been battling with cancer for some years now - but the surgery on Thursday, which was meant to save his life, was unsuccessful.

Following confirmation of his death, Barca's president Bartomeu said in a statement:

"Tito will be reference as a man and in terms of football for Barcelona forever. We thank him for everything he taught us. Rest in peace!"

Accordingly, the Catalans, as a club, also sent their condolences to his family.

"The club wishes to express its most heartfelt sympathy to his family, who are being joined in this moment of mourning by Barcelona members and fans all around the world, as well as the rest of the footballing and sporting world."

Tito is survived by a wife and two children. His funeral will take place on Monday at 20:00CET.

May the gentle soul of this great manager rest in peace.
