Bayern Munich president sentenced to jail

The president and board chairman of FC Bayern Munich, Uli Hoeness, has been sentenced to jail by the Munich District Court II for evading  €28.5 million in taxes.

The 62-year-old, who played for the Bavarians between 1970-1979, has been a very influential force behind the successes of the German Champions over recent years; as he maintained a good rapport with both players, managers and fans.
However, evading taxes, according to Uli, was one of the greatest mistakes he ever committed; of which the evaded sum was approximately $39.6m. Continue...

A more striking fact is, whilst the judgement was passed, Uli could afford to appeal, but because of his good heart, the wealthy German has decided, along with his family, to accept the jail term.

"After discussing the matter with my family I have decided to accept the judgment passed by Munich District Court (Landgericht) II regarding my tax affairs," he said in a statement released on the Bayern Munich website.

"Evading tax was the biggest mistake of my life. I accept the consequences of this mistake," he continued.

"Furthermore I hereby resign the offices of president of FC Bayern München e.V. and chairman of the FC Bayern München AG supervisory board with immediate effect."

Having resigned as both president and chairman, Uli should serve in jail for three years and six months.
